There has been 5 different models of the the BMW M3. We all know about the first BMW M3 – the BMW E30 M3, but lets discuss the others.
BMW E36 M3
The BMW E36 M3 was launched in the USA from 1995-1999. This brought the BMW M3 to the masses, as it pulled back on the sports car nature of the E30 M3 and brought in more usability and luxury. The E36 M3 also brought the 4-door sedan and convertible as model versions to the M3.
BMW E46 M3
The BMW E46 M3 is the benchmark of all the M3s. Available in the USA from 2001-2006, it is considered the last analog BMW M3 and it carried the rare feel of the E30 M3 but brought in the latest in technology and horsepower. 333-hp and 280 lb of torque with a weight of 3,300 lbs made the BMW E46 M3 feel alive. Plus it was the generation before the electronics really took over the car.
BMW E92 M3
The BMW E92 M3 is going to be special due to being the only M3 with a V8 engine. Available in the USA from 2008-2012, the E92 M3 had a rip-roaring, high revving 414 hp engine that revved all the way up to 8,400 rpms. The engine and exhaust noises on this car is magical. Never again will you see a car and engine like this from BMW.
BMW F80 M3/M4
The BMW F80 M3 is also known as a M4. BMW decided to make the M3 sedan an M3 while the 2-door coupe the M4. Yes, unfortunately marketing is now in charge of “M”. The F80 M3/M4 now comes with a inline-6 engine with 2 turbos. Power is similar to the previous generation but now there is tons of torque, close to 400, from this engine. It is the current model range and more information will come as the car is driven by owners.
